Hands are expressive, and are endlessly busy working for us. Any glove that interrupts that rhythm, even slightly, becomes an inconvenience. This strong sentiment guided our fingerless glove design process…
Our intentions were to protect the hands, but never restrain them.
The most obvious decision was also the most deliberate – exposing just the fingertips. This allows you to feel, grip, type, and touch with complete freedom, while the rest of the hand remains gently protected. Many fingerless gloves stop abruptly just below the first knuckle. We chose to go further. Ours extend slightly higher, creating a more elegant line across the hand, offering better coverage without sacrificing movement. It’s a small adjustment, but one that completely changes how the glove looks – and how it feels. You’re comforted but not restricted.
Then came the construction.
Anything but traditional.
Traditional gloves rely on multiple panels and a separate thumb piece, which can feel bulky and interrupt the flow of the design. I wanted none of that. Instead, we developed a refined two-panel construction that removes the need for clunky joins and awkward seams. The result is a glove that feels uninterrupted – visually clean, softly sculpted, and intuitive on the hand.
At the edges, we made another conscious departure from convention. Rather than turned hems or heavy finishes, the fingers and wrist are left with raw edges. This creates a seamless sensation, as though the glove simply fades into the skin. There’s no digging in, no hard stop – just a gentle, continuous line.
The fabric itself had to do a great deal of work. Featherweight, surprisingly light, and exceptionally soft, it feels almost like a second skin – or so the feedback tells us. There’s a subtle compression – not restrictive, but supportive – best described as a ‘gentle hug’. Enough to feel secure, never enough to feel tight.
And finally, there is the balance of restraint – and play. Nancy Hassett Fingerless Gloves are produced in limited runs, allowing us to explore designs that are forward, on-trend, and quietly fun, without becoming overly precious. They are not intended to be timeless basics. They are meant to feel considered, current, and a little bit special.
I hope you feel incredibly special wearing them.
In my next post I’ll share with you the inspiration behind the colours, patterns and designs.
